  Members of the DECISION Consortium met in Padova, Italy, to discuss recent research results in preparation of several manuscripts shedding some new light on the pathophysiology of acute decompensation of cirrhosis and development of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) – a syndrome associated with high short-term mortality. After three years of intensive work, the upcoming COMBAT trial will use newly identified biomarkers to predict disease progression and test safety and effectiveness of a combinatorial drug therapy.

  7^th Steering Committee (SC) Meeting in Pamplona, Spain

  Our 7th Steering Committee Meeting took place in Pamplona, Spain from 29 – 30 March, 2023. During the two days, work package leaders and members have presented and discussed their scientific data and the overall status of their work package.

  With fruitful discussions, the consortium solidified the path for the coming months with regard to paper writing and the COMBAT-trial.

  In this event organized by ELPA with the title ‘The COMBAT-trial: A novel COMBinATorial therapy with albumin and enoxaparin in patients with decompensated cirrhosis at high-risk of poor outcome.’ experts from DECISION explained the upcoming clinical trial to patient representatives. They discussed the recruitment process and what it means from an ethical perspective. Great interest was shown in the question how patient representatives and clinicians can work together to facilitate recruitment for this trial.

  4th General Assembly (GA) meeting in Madrid

  The 4th GA meeting of DECISION took place from 19-21 October 2022 in Madrid. The meeting was a great success with the first day devoted to paper writing: on that day, 12 meetings took place to discuss and progress on 7 different papers with more than 20 people. On the second day, we extensively discussed the specifics of our upcoming COMBAT-Trial as well as our brand new and refined animal models of ACLF. The third day was devoted to multi-omics analyses, bioinformatics and machine learning as well as an update on the newly developed tools and checklists for ethics and data protection and the health economics studies planned in DECISION. We thank our Scientific Advisory Board members for their valuable feedback to improve the quality of our studies.

  14th International Meeting on Therapy in Liver Diseases

  From 21-23 September 2022, the 14^th edition of the International Meeting on Therapy in Liver Diseases organised by the Liver Unit at Hospital Clinic of Barcelona will take place. The aim of the meeting is to highlight and discuss the latest advances in Clinical Hepatology to be applied in every day clinical practice.

  On Thursday, 22^nd September at 3.45 p.m., DECISION member, Paolo Caraceni, will give a talk on “Acute decompensation in 2022: what is mandatory in the first diagnostic workup?”

  The AASLD (American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases) brings together clinicians, associates, and scientists from around the world to exchange information on the latest research, discuss new developments in liver treatment and transplantation, and network with leading experts in the field of hepatology.

  The 2021 edition had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, but we are already looking forward to this year's EPU de Gastroentérologie et d’Hépatologie de l’Université de Paris from 29 - 30 April 2022 in Paris, France.

  At this year's conference, project coordinator Pierre-Emmanuel Rautou will give a presentation on the topic ‘Why is portal hypertension deleterious?’. Stay tuned!

  From 27-28 January 2022, consortium member Prof. Jonel Trebicka (GUF), who had co-organised the Falk Foundation online Symposium, served as chairman of Session II on "Alcoholic hepatitis, liver failure, and systemic disturbance" and the poster session, while Dr. Richard Moreau and Dr. Sophie Lotersztajn (both at INSERM) gave talks on novel research data and discussed alcoholic liver disease and liver failure as an ailment that disturbs biological communication in the entire body, including systemic inflammation.

  3rd General Assembly Meeting successfully completed

  During DECISION’s first ever hybrid-meeting, 34 participants gathered face-to-face from 8-10 September in sunny Castelldefels (Barcelona), Spain. Additionally, 20 participants joined us remotely via Zoom. Discussions on novel rat models and the clinical study, as well as a poster session for the Early Career Scientists, were only a few highlights. Thanks to the amazing work of all partners, the project is progressing well.

  On 8^th September 2021, 29 participants of the DECISION Consortium attended the first MasterClass which was organized as part of the WP7 training programme before the start of the 3^rd General Assembly Meeting, in Barcelona, Spain.

  The MasterClass included two talks on “How to write a paper (focus on original and review articles)" by Dr. Paolo Angelo from the University of Padova and Prof. Dr. Jonel Trebicka from the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main.   Overall, the feedback was positive, and this format will be repeated again at future General Assembly meetings.

  DECISION Symposium connected to EASL School on Hepatology 2021

  Successful MICROB-PREDICT and DECISION – Online Symposium ‘Management of acute-on-chronic liver failure’ on Thursday, 2nd September 2021 from 12.30 - 16.30h CEST which was organised at the occasion of the EASL School of Hepatology.

  At this symposium, several experts of both project consortia presented recent advances in the fields of microbiome research and systems medicine, introduced the role of proteomics and metabolomics in hepatology and discussed treatment strategies and their mechanisms of action in acute-on-chronic liver failure.

  With almost 100 registered attendees and speakers from 37 countries our symposium was a great success and we would like to thank everyone for their participation and the lively discussions.

  At the International Liver Congress™ 2021, the cirrhosis and complications track presents an overview of the role of vessels in liver diseases. The track content will include not only the role of liver sinusoidal changes in liver disease progression, but also the management of portal and hepatic vein thrombosis and their complications. The management of complications of portal hypertension will also be addressed, including the place of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) and the management of patients with advanced cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF).
